Why Room exists

I loved Arc browser.

It introduced an amazing vertical sidebar, where even the address bar moved to the side to give more room to the web itself. It reinvented bookmarks as tabs that don’t get cleared. It blocked ads and trackers. It ran on Chromium, still the most powerful web engine. And most delightfully, they went all out to make Chromium live inside a truly native Mac app.

I loved Arc more than any other browser. Sadly, they pivoted to Dia, got acquired by Atlassian, and now Arc barely gets engine updates.

Room is my love letter to the greatest browser ever made. Now open source, but still a true Mac app with a de-Googled Chromium heart. I hope it can become a new home for everyone else who has been looking for a new browser, just like me. Try Room, and let me know how it can be even better.

Let’s build the next greatest browser, together.

— Jonas Creator of Room

Everything you love about the web.
None of the noise.

Chromium, without Google

Every site works, because Room runs on Chromium. Everything in it that talked to Google is gone: no account, no sync, no updater calling home. Leave Room on an empty page and it sends nothing at all.

Ads blocked. Code open.

Room blocks ads and trackers out of the box with well-kept open lists, and you can add your own or let a site through. Every line of Room is open source, so you never have to take our word for it.

Hand-crafted for macOS

A real Mac app, written in Swift and AppKit. Native menus and text, the shortcuts your hands already know, and Liquid Glass where macOS uses it. It feels at home because it was made here.

A place for everything,
and room to think.

  1. Keep what matters within reach.

Essentials sit at the top as tiles. Pinned pages remember where they belong. Today’s tabs tidy themselves away after twelve hours, into an Archive you can always search.

⌘D pin a page ⇧⌘D make it essential

  2. A space for each part of your day.

Work, reading, the trip you are planning. Give every space its own colours and, if you like, its own profile with separate logins. Swipe between them with two fingers.

    ⌃1 to 9 jump to a space

  3. Press ⌘T and type.

One field for everything: open tabs in every space, pinned pages, history and search. Type > for commands, or a keyword like yt and Tab to search a site directly.

  4. Look before you leave.

Shift-click a link and it opens in a Peek above the page you are reading. Keep it as a tab, or close it and carry on where you were.

⇧ click to peek ⌘O keep as a tab

  5. Two pages, one window.

Put a reference next to your draft, or four dashboards in a grid. Splits stay together in the sidebar and come back the way you left them.

    ⇧⌘= add a pane

Small things, done properly.

Reader, for long reads

Strip a page down to its words, set in type that is easy on the eyes. ⌥⇧⌘R

An essay in Room’s reader.

Your extensions work

Install them from the Chrome Web Store and pin the ones you use beside the address.

Music keeps playing

Whatever is playing, in any space, waits above the sidebar’s footer.

Picture in picture

Pop a video out and keep it in the corner while you work.

Hide the sidebar

Give the page the whole window. Rest at the edge and the sidebar slides back over it in glass.

Screenshots, built in

Drag over what you want, or take the whole page from top to bottom. Copy it, save it, or open it in a tab. ⇧⌘2

Moving in takes a minute

Bring your bookmarks, history and passwords along. Coming from Arc? Your spaces and pinned tabs come too.

  • Safari

Seven prints. Pick yours.

Room’s icon is a small window onto a risograph print. Choose the one that suits your Dock in Settings, under Appearance.

Room

Every shortcut you know.
Each one yours to change.

Rebind any of them in Settings, under Shortcuts. The keys Room needs stay with Room, so a page can never take ⌘T from you.

Built in the open.

Room is a Swift app on our own fork of Chromium. Our changes live in one folder, with every patch kept small enough to read over coffee. Build it yourself, read how it works, or send a fix.
